The term that describes the size relationship between different elements of a design is "proportion." This concept is crucial in design as it determines how sizes relate to each other and how they contribute to the overall harmony or imbalance of a composition. Proportion helps to establish a visual hierarchy, guiding viewers' focus and ensuring that elements are balanced and aesthetically pleasing.

For example, in architecture, the proportion of windows to walls can greatly affect both the visual appeal and functionality of a space. Designers use proportion to create a sense of unity and coherence in their work, allowing every part to relate appropriately to the whole.

While emphasis, design, and color scheme are essential aspects of visual composition, they pertain to different elements of the design process. Emphasis focuses on drawing attention to particular areas, design encompasses the overall plan or arrangement of elements, and color scheme deals with the selection of colors used in the design. None of these terms directly define the size relationships among parts as effectively as proportion does.
